The Debut Novel

1850s –1945

An Essex/Limehouse tale.

Seth Marchwood and Mary Nolan, each shaped by childhood depravation, ignorance and cruelty, marry in Essex in1877. Together they grasp opportunities from within the vice trade, horseflesh markets and the terror created by Jack the Ripper. WW1 offers them monetary gain through the supply of horses and fodder to the military.

As industrialisation takes hold, they confront societal change and, by fair means and foul, they, and their sons continually strive for economic survival in the changing environmental context.

Their unfolding story is watched by ethereal whisperers .
